SmokeFree 2025 New Zealand
Ok, so here’s the goal: bring down smoking to zero or near zero percent in New Zealand on or before 2025.
The question is: Are you going to be a part of the solution?
The Zero Explanation:
Alright. This might get a bit technical, but bear with me.
To some people, the notion of eliminating smoking or bringing it to zero percent in New Zealand seems impossible. Well, it is, if no one cooperates.
As a target, zero percent is relative to the population size of New Zealand and the sample size of smokers left within the country. So, let’s say you have a population sample of 1000 people. If you have a 100 smokers within that sample, you have a 10% sample
representation of smokers. If you have 10 smokers, you have a 1% sample representation of smokers. Removing just 1 smoker from that sample size (1%), brings the sample representation to just 0.9%. Although that is not a true zero value, 9 people out of 1000 is counted as a zero percentage of smokers within the country.
Now hold on, hold on, we know this isn’t a justification of still having smokers within the general population, but, achieving those results is a better alternative than maintaining the status quo, right? Now, the question is, how do we get there?
Your Individual Contribution Is Essential to the Success of SmokeFree 2025 New Zealand
There are 3 types of smokers.
Non-smokers or people who have yet to smoke their first cigarette
If you’re not a smoker
Don’t start smoking. Nothing good can come out of it.
Light smokers or people who occasionally smoke
If you’re a light smoker
You still have a chance to get rid of the habit before it gets a stronger hold of you. Light smokers are the people who, through minimal effort, can get rid of the habit. Engaging in social or physical activities that restrict smoking can be a big help. Or you can switch to vaping to replace your controllable smoking habit.
Heavy smokers or people addicted to smoking
If you’re addicted to smoking
Addiction to smoking is a real thing. Although it is only partly because of the nicotine. Most people who are addicted to smoking are addicted to the habits surrounding the activity. The simple act of lighting a cigarette and bringing it to your mouth is one of the reasons why people find it hard to get rid of smoking.
But that’s not to say there’s nothing you can do about it.
There are many ways to get rid of the habit. There are individuals, groups, organizations that can help you kick the habit. Or, as an alternative, you can slowly switch from smoking tobacco products to vaping using special starter kits. Vape juices or e-liquids also have different levels of nicotine concentration so you can slowly wean yourself off your cigarette addiction.
Oh wait, there’s a fourth type of smoker: The one who doesn’t want to get rid of the habit
There are people who know smoking is bad for their health but are unable to control their addiction or are simply not interested in stopping. If you’re one of these people, you can still minimize the amount of smoking that you do on a daily basis by alternating between vaping and smoking or by simply being more responsible about your smoking.
Being responsible about your smoking habit entails being aware of designated smoking areas, disposing of your butts properly and smoking away from vulnerable members of the population such as children.
And even if you think there’s no hope in sight for you to stop, you can always give it a try and become one of the three identified classes of smokers discussed above.
In the end, it all boils down to each individual’s conscious involvement in bringing this idea to reality.
